By the end of 2025, electricity prices have already increased at more than 2x the rate of inflation. And unfortunately, it's not slowing down anytime soon. Prices are expected to jump another 6% through 2027. What's happening? The short answer: AI. The long answer: AI runs on data centers. Data centers run on electricity. And right now, we're building data centers faster than we can generate the electricity to power them. That's supply and demand for ya: demand is surging while supply is tight. And with AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic sitting on a small modest budget of TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars to keep expanding, that demand isn't slowing down anytime soon. On the bright side... sort of? Anthropic has promised to work with utility companies to potentially help offset higher electricity costs in areas that can't generate enough power to keep up. And before you think they're just being generous cats, they're not. It's because people (like you and me) are fed up, and it's getting the attention of lawmakers. 2 weeks ago, the first bipartisan bill was introduced that basically says to these AI companies: "You can build your data centers, but you can't pass those costs onto everyday people." Will this bill be successful? Who knows but I'll keep y'all updated. π The Breakdown:Here's how this impacts your money and wallet: Where you live matters a lot. Right now, most data centers are concentrated in California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia so if you live in these places, you're likely to feel the biggest price increases. And unfortunately, lower-income households will absorb most of the pain. Why? Because energy costs make up a larger share of their overall budget. It's still too early to tell how effective lawmakers will be in keeping energy prices in check. But Anthropic's promise will *hopefully* help out a bit. Fingers crossed. βοΈ Your Next Move:Here's what you need to do today: If you're struggling from rising electricity prices, here are 2 things you can do. 1) Look into affordability and relief programs There are a few nationwide relief programs designed to help with high electricity bills. One worth checking out is LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program). It's a federal program that helps qualifying households cover energy costs. You can also call your utility company directly and ask about "Hardship Plans." Most people don't know these exist, but many utility companies offer them. And depending on where you live, your city may have local programs too. For example, New York has the Enhanced Energy Affordability Program (EEAP). A quick Google search of "[your city] + electricity affordability program" is a good starting point. 2) Set up your Freedom Spending Plan One of the most effective things you can do right now is to take control of your spending. I know "budgeting" sucks because it feels restrictive. Like you're putting yourself on a financial diet. I get it. That's why I spent countless hours building my newest free resource called the Freedom Spending Plan. It's designed to help you allocate your spending in a way that actually builds wealth without making you feel like you're sacrificing everything you enjoy.
