I’ve noticed there are usually 2 groups of people when it comes to their cash and savings.

1. One group keeps most of their money in a checking account because they don’t know where else to put it.
2. The other group moves their money into a high-yield savings account and calls it a day.

Both groups are at different starting points, but they're making the same mistake:

They’re treating a complete Cash Strategy like it’s one account or one financial move.

But an effective Cash Strategy helps you decide:

1. What each portion of your cash is for
2. Where it belongs
3. How to help it earn more while keeping it accessible​​

And I’m not talking about investing money you may need soon in the stock market.

I used to think I was good with just one account… A HYSA felt like the finish line until I realized it was only one part of a bigger system.

Here’s how you should think about your Cash Strategy.

Start by asking what the money needs to do.

1. What is this portion of cash for?
2. When might I need it?
3. How quickly do I need able to access it?

For example, cash you may need immediately has a different job from cash you don’t need for several months.

Depending on its job, the best place might be a checking account, a high-yield savings account, T-Bills etc.

Cash you need immediately may earn less in exchange for easier access.

But cash you can leave alone for several months may have other options that could help it earn a lot more.

Once you know which tools fit the job, you can compare what those options are paying and choose where that portion of cash can earn you the most.

Knowing the options exist is only the beginning.

The complete strategy is deciding how much belongs in each place and creating rules that keep everything working together automatically.

Try this today:

Choose one portion of your cash and write down:

1. Its job
2. When you expect to need it
3. How quickly you must be able to access it
4. How much you're currently earning from it

If you can’t answer the first 3 questions, that money may still be Lazy Cash, which is cash without a clearly assigned job.

If you can't answer the 4th question or you’ve never compared rates with the other options available, that cash has a job but may not be fully optimized.

Both can cost you potential earnings from money you’ve already worked hard to save.
