The first time I realized my cash could make money for me, I was deciding whether to order fried calamari.

I was sitting with my friends when my phone buzzed. It was an interest payment from my High Yield Savings Account (HYSA).

It wasn’t huge, but I remember thinking: “Oh damn, this actually works.”

Money I already earned was making MORE money for me.

But it made me wonder: what’s next?

What else could I do to earn more from the cash and savings I don’t plan to invest in the stock market?

For me, one of those answers was T-Bills.

Different amounts of my cash may have different opportunities to earn more in different places.

And if some of your cash aren’t in the right places, the difference can be quite big.

For example, most traditional saving accounts offer a 0.01% APY for your cash.

At that rate, $10,000 would earn you about $1 over a year.

If that same $10,000 were earning 4%, it would earn roughly $400 over a year.

That’s a $399 difference from the same cash without saving another dollar or putting it in the stock market.

Whether your cash is sitting under your mattress, checking, TIPS, savings, CDs, bonds, money market funds, HYSA, etc. the question is the same:

Could some of it be working harder?

The point isn’t to move every dollar around just to chase the highest rate.

It’s to find the cash whose current home no longer matches its job.
